As an EP reward at the end of second year, I was offered some work experience at Iona Kent and South East leading on my own project. As part of this, I conducted my own research and wrote an academic report for the company to help them to secure a collaborative project.

I worked in the office with the Iona team and learnt about the DSA (Disabled Students' Allowances) process and the problems that students face when coming to university with a physical or mental health issue. I worked with them on a confidential proposal, with the aims of initiating an inclusive and supportive project that can benefit all students at university.

As a result of the two-week placement, I continued my research with the company and pursued the completion of the project.

The workshop consisted of how to write a good CV, how to tackle an interview and improve our interview skills and the process of being selected for a job. This session was useful in getting my CV reviewed and evaluating my strengths and weaknesses during interviews.

By the end of my first year at University I had managed to take part in over 100 hours of volunteering. I took up a temporary placement with a local family whose son has Downs syndrome and autism where I volunteered for 4 hours a week helping to teach him how to speak and learning more about the respective conditions. I also volunteered at events such as Keynestock where I help set up the event, sell tickets and pack up at the end of the festival.

During my first semester at the University I took part in 3 weekly sessions with the Psychology department at our local Umbrella centre as part of the Breaking Barriers project. Each of the three sessions took a different perspective of mental health and how they affect everyday life, from the media and their attitudes towards mental health to stigma and medical care.

After this, I decided to volunteer with the centre for the next month where I helped them to run the kitchen, set up rooms for events and help with everyday tasks.

Over the summer of 2017 I applied for the volunteer position of admin coordinator for Canterbury Nightline. My role started with creating role descriptions for volunteers, helping create the website, and produce information guides ready for volunteers. Since then, I have interviewed and trained volunteers, promoted Nightline at freshers fairs and university events and even been on training courses provided by the Nightline charity itself.

Nightline launched in February, 2018. We have now trained 27 listening volunteers and are open 5 days a week to support students across Canterbury through the night.

During my second year at University, I progressed through the four KSCV stages which amounted in 308 hours of volunteering. This was gained through being a welcome helper for the university where I helped to move in Freshers to their new accommodation, I also became a part of the Buddy scheme which involved being paired with a new student and attending events with them to help them settle into the university.

I helped out at events such as the Pets2Therapy dog day, leafleting for FragileX awareness and running events as a committee member of Girl Up such as organising the Fall Ball and the K Bar Quiz for Girl Up and Breast Cancer Now. During this time I also helped out at Freshers and Refreshers events by running stalls as part of various groups.

UKC Girl Up were invited to meet the Girl Up Charity directors in London for their yearly summit. Here we met the UN representatives and got to learn more about the origins and goals of the charity, as well as discussing what events we have done to contribute. This was an amazing way to showcase our own events and also see the impact that events such as ours have on the outreach of the charity, as well as gain the tools and knowledge we need to improve our fundraising events even further.

As part of our role, we supported new and returning student groups, ran volunteer projects and approved of funding for groups and individuals. We ran stalls at Freshers Fairs to talk about the support that KU can give to student groups and ran volunteer federations to help groups to improve their skills and network with others.
