Folio Rendering 08/02/2011 RSS
This was a really interesting week for Folio. We took some of the sketches we had done in Freehand Friday's last term and had to render them using Photoshop. I chose an image of the Guildhall located in Folkestone and began by painting the wall colour using a gradient tool and texturing it using filters. I painted on the shadows cast by the various parts of the building in order to create depth and realism. I used a Gaussian Blur on these shadows to soften them.
I also painted the plant pots and filled them with plants, I also painted the windows to represent glass. I used a pattern fill and altered the perspective of this to create the road in front and added faded out photographs of buildings on either side of my sketch to represent The Guildhall being on a street. This was an interesting excercise and I am pleased with what I produced.
Folio Montage 25/01/2011 RSS
In today's Folio lesson we learnt about Photoshop montages and how to put them together. This involved picking a photograph of a model and combining that with photographs of realworld vehicles, animals and people to create a realistic scene.
I was really excited at the prospect of being taught Photoshop properly because I had never had the opportunity before now. I found learning about the layer blending tools particularly interesting because I had used them before when following web based tutorials but never understood how they worked.
I began with a model of a house that I took from the internet. I had a lot of problems with this photograph because its perspective made it difficult to find images of a sky and props that would look realistic against the model. There was also a large watermark on the image that ruined the overall look of the scene. I was able to remove this using the clone stamp tool but this was quite time consuming.
I decided to start again and picked an image of a model that showed an interior and an exterior. This meant I could produce two contrasting scenes in one image. I selected the interior using the polygonal lasso tool and altered the colour balance to make it feel warm and welcoming. I added a sky, landscape and foliage to try and make it feel like a harsh scandinavian hillside. Next I got a tarmac texture and had to alter the perspective in order to make it look like a driveway. I added a rugged BMW X5, again reflecting the landscape around the model and a man walking a dog. Contrasting with the cold exterior, I placed a young girl running around the interior making the model actually feel like a 'home'.
Folio 3DS Max 01/02/2011 RSS
Today we had an introduction into 3DS Max. We learnt how to produce basic shapes and then extrude them to make a volume. We then learnt how to manipulate these volumes into all sorts of different shapes. I can see the software has real potential and I look forward to finding out more about it.
Folio Adobe Premiere 15/02/2011 RSS
We had an introduction into Adobe Premiere in our Folio lecture today. We learnt how to import files and how to place them on the timescale as well as how to order them, apply effects including fades and how to work with audio. We also learnt about how Premiere was similar to Photoshop with its use of layers and how you footage can fade to black if you do not have another layer of footage below it.
I found the use of keying particularly interesting. This is when you shoot a subject against a blue or green screen and can remove the green/blue background and can layer the subject over different footage.
To practice our use of these skills we spent some time with some stock footage putting together a short video. These skills will help us in the future when producing 3D walkthroughs of our designs for clients.
Folio 3DS Max 08/03/2010 RSS
Today we made a perspective view of part of our Caravanserai design. I decided to produce a scene of the corridor looking through to the dining room and kitchen area as I wanted to see how the columns dividing these spaces might look. Overall I got on well with using 3DS Max for this task but I look forward to learning how to render realistic lighting and furniture.
