Digital Media Society President - (20 points awarded)

Last updated 03 June 2016, 19:07

I am the president of the Digital Media Society at the University of Kent which has given me the opportunity to work with a number of external clients on various design projects. My role as president includes mediating with clients, organising meetings, securing funding and sponsorship and working to deliver solutions to project briefs. I also organise workshops and training sessions to build the skills of our members.

I was able to secure Sponsorship funding from Accenture for our society which helped us to promote ourselves within the University. I gained experience in writing a Sponsorship Proposal and corresponded with professionals at Accenture. I then had a phone interview to discuss the terms of the sponsorship and was able to use my negotiation skills to talk about the funding amount. It has benefited the society as it gave us a helping hand in developing and enhancing the wider student experience.

I was the Project Leader for the film and photography coverage of the 4-week long Employability Festival with over 100 events at the University of Kent. The Project lasted from October 2015 - February 2016. My role required me to organise and co-ordinate a team of students and equipment to deliver 3 videos of the event. I was the editor of all three videos and in charge of taking photography and collating everyone’s work together. Not only did I improve my technical skills, I also improved my interpersonal and communication skills as I had to delegate work and be in contact with clients, exhibitors and students. I have improved my problem-solving skills as we faced a number of challenges and logistical considerations to overcome. I have benefited my team-working and team-management skills as I took the opportunity to help others in the Digital Media Society learn by putting them into teams and teaching them editing techniques.

Film-maker for NHS (30 points awarded)

Posted on 04 June 2016, 18:49
Last updated 04 June 2016, 18:53

I have worked with the NHS to create a video promoting their new Single Point of Access system for those in need of assistance with their mental health. The task required me and two others to film various members of the NHS team including nurses, GP’s and the Executive Director. I then edited the interviews adding text and visual effects to create one informational video for their internal website. This was the very first filming project I had ever undertaken, so there was a lot to learn with filming, sound mixing and video editing.

Website Designer for NHS (30 points awarded)

Last updated 05 June 2016, 22:49

I helped the NHS School of Psychiatry (Health Education Kent, Sussex and Surrey) re-design their website utilising engaging digital elements to promote the school to prospective doctors. My role also required me to create content for the website in the form of videos and photography. I filmed and edited 4 videos of members of the School of Psychiatry including the Head of the School; Dr Alastair Forest and 3 doctors in different stages of training to be featured on the website. I had to make sure it was consistent with the existing website structure and used the same colour scheme. I therefore had many discussions with NHS officials during the designing process, including presenting Photoshop mock-ups of proposed ideas and incorporating their own plans for the website functionality.

Kent German Network Website Creation Project (35 points awarded)

Posted on 04 June 2016, 18:58

I was part of a team of designers that were tasked with producing a logo for the 'Kent German Network'. As well as the logo, we created design concept mock ups for the design of their current website. I personally researched into website designs that would most suit the functionality they were after and presented them to the client. I was able to give advice and answer questions related to the design of the website. We worked alongside the KITC who coded the website. We had regular meetings with KITC and Kent German Network to update each other on the project outcomes. The project started in November 2014 and ended in July of 2015. I learnt a great deal from the experience because it gave me practical knowledge of working in synergy with back end programmers. I also gained an understanding of the design process and the different stages needed to complete a project of such a large size.

Last updated 05 June 2016, 23:08

I am a mentor to over 10 students to assist them with their academic studies ranging from web design to animation. I find it particularly rewarding using my skills to help others. In my role as Academic Mentor, the skills, knowledge and abilities of those I mentor change from person to person - I therefore have to identify the best way to help someone because everyone has a different way of learning. Sometimes mentees would like someone to talk to about their problems and I am able to use my listening skills to offer them the best and most relevant advice.

Charity Media Officer (20 points awarded)

Posted on 03 June 2016, 18:24

I have had and continue to have extensive involvement with the charity ‘A Village in Syria’ to help with design work and fundraising. Website Designer for Charity (35 points awarded)

Posted on 05 June 2016, 0:01

I developed and designed a website for the charity 'A Village in Syria' by myself and have been in charge of managing content and administrating the website. I set up a donation button on the website and wrote about the different projects they are running to allow the charity to receive donations over the internet. It has impacted the charity hugely as they now can accept donations from all over the world, and can be contacted by people remotely. I set up an email account for the charity and a contact form on the website. I also wrote content for the website, such as all about endangered species in Syria and how the different projects work and where the money goes. I also update the website with news posts of the charities different activities and events. I linked the website with the facebook page to promote the charity via social media and provided information and a contact form to encourage volunteers into the charity. It was a huge task for me as I had never coded a website in PHP, and therefore needed to do a lot of research. The project took about 6 months to finally complete because there was so much information and features to put onto the website, and I was working on my own. I also made the website responsive so that it can be accessed by mobile devices, which took quite a lot of time. Overall, the project has helped me build upon my technical skills as I had to research into the coding in order to make the website. I also learnt more about social media marketing and interaction and it was a great project to be able to put into my portfolio. Available here: avillageinsyria.org
